e. Migration study over the Strait of Gibraltar The importance of this area has not gone unnoticed by researchers, and there are ongoing programmes recording the migration, providing vital information about population numbers. The Gibraltar Ornithological and Natural History Society has online records of raptor counts made over Gibraltar for the last few years (available at http://www.gibnet.gi/~gonhs/), as well as charts showing the months individual migratory species are seen over the Strait (http://www.gibnet.gi/~gonhs/gibralta1.htm). The MIGRES programme has been collecting vital information on species and numbers of migrants crossing the Strait of Gibraltar since 1997 (www.tarifa.net/nature/migreeng.htm). You can read more about all the birds found at the Strait in Clive Finlayson’s definitive book ‘Birds of the Strait of Gibraltar’, published in 1992. |
